Natural pick-me ups: Lighten your mood and channel your vitality
Inspiring motivators that fit seamlessly into your everyday life
You know those days where every little task seems like a huge effort, nothing works as easily as it used to, and you can’t wait for the day to be over? We all have days, sometimes even longer periods like these, where negative thoughts and low moods can take over.
Did you know that there are some simple techniques you can use to lift your spirits and refresh your mind?
A bad mood, anxiety and angry feelings can be exacerbated by the weather, your sleep and the quality of food and water you consume (learn more about healthy sleep in our blog article, “5 simple sleep tips”). So it is completely normal to feel exhausted and even unreasonable or irritated now and again.
Rather than getting stuck in those negative feelings, look towards small and natural ways to boost your spirits and improve your state of mind.
1. Find reasons to laugh
Smiling and laughing are natural human actions and signal friendliness and peaceful intentions, creating positive emotions within you and with those around you. But not just that, laughing out loud and sincerely has proven to have relaxing effects on your mind and body. Plus, the action stimulates our brains to release “happiness hormones”!
So brighten up those dull days with a funny movie or TV series, call a friend and relive some crazy happy memories you’ve shared, or listen to a comedy podcast.
2. Pamper your skin
To feel relaxed within your own body you need to take some time out to treat your body the way it deserves. Simple things you can do at home to treat your skin include applying a nourishing face mask and stimulating facial massage. Use wet fingertips or a jade massage roller device to stimulate blood flow, helping to remove toxins and hence reducing puffiness. Apply natural nourishing balms like Hero Balm to dry skin, including lips, hands and elbows. For extra hydration, apply before you go to bed and you’ll feel the difference when you wake up with noticeably softer skin.
Small acts of love to yourself need not cost much but can make you feel a million dollars.
3. Treat yourself with homemade food
Even though we all know how important it is to eat healthily and stay hydrated (more on that in our blog post, “How to thrive during lockdown fatigue”), it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t treat ourselves with delicious food and drinks. There are so many simple, quick recipes that will recharge your energy and brighten your mood – and help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
🍹 make smoothies out of frozen fruits which you can store in your freezer and use as needed | 🍪 bake cookies or muffins (way faster than baking cakes and in handy small portions) | 🍵 enjoy a hearty vegetable soup – use those vegetables in the bottom of your fridge, add some herbs and spices and enjoy!
The best things about homemade food:
- you know exactly what it contains (eg. amount of sugar)
- you can adjust it to your personal preference (add ingredients you love), and
- you will feel satisfied enjoying what you created from scratch, and will be more motivated to do more home cooking as you practice!
4. Refresh with essential oils
Use the relaxing power of plants and herbs to revive your spirits. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and are proven to affect various physiological benefits. Essential oils can be used on the skin by way of massage or in a skin care preparation (always diluted), inhaled through an aroma diffuser and used in the bath to create a relaxing, positive atmosphere which also helps to open and cleanse the airways.
The beneficial effects provided by essential oils include a balanced nervous system, uplifted mood and improved focus and concentration – to name just a few. We offer a variety of essential oil applications, including our natural functional perfumes, which you can find here.
These four natural pick-me-ups are just the start: go for a walk in the fresh air, pat a cat or dog, lay on the grass with your eyes closed, read your favourite book, swim in the ocean, listen to favourite tunes, smell fresh flowers… There are so many natural pick-me-ups that will greatly improve the quality of your life, day by day.
Sometimes we forget to do what makes us feel good, so take these hints as a gentle reminder to look after yourself, and encourage those around you, to take a few minutes off now and again to enhance your health and wellbeing naturally.
